It’s June, which means it’s time for a new season of anime shows to start airing: Summer 2007.

Here’s the list of anime that I’m interested in at least watching for five minutes, not every single premiering show. Feel free to suggest any other show that I should try out! (Code Geass was one suggested last year, and it’s my favorite show now)

I count animes that begin airing from June through August as a part of the summer season.

BACCANO!
Air date: July 26th, 2007
Opening Theme: Gun’s & Roses by Paradise Lunch
Ending Theme: Calling by Oda Kaori
Interest: Middle

Story: In the year 1711, on the Atlantic Ocean, a group of alchemists who left their homeland for the New World gained
something from the devil… The Ale of Immortality. Those who drank the alcohol became immortal and a strange ability to consume one another with their right hand.
Fast forward to New York, 1930. There are various people who live in the underground society, including a boy named Filo from the Martillo family and a member of its management named Miser, the burglar couple Isaac and Milia, three mafia brothers, a delinquent named Dallas and his younger sister, Eve, and the alchemist Cerrado, who is over 200 years of age and his assistant, Ennis. Cerrado revives the Ale of Immortality and causes the lives of those people to cross.
Then a train carrying nothing but queer people (murderer, revolutionary terrorists, senator, fiancée, immortal boy) on the Transcontinental Railroad departs from Chicago for New York…
Impression: This is supposedly a ’strange and violent’ drama that takes place during the Prohibition Era. Forgive me if I
romanized any of the names wrong, which is highly probable. I’m also not sure about how to label that “Beer of Immortality” in the story… What’s a good way to translate “alcohol” without sounding weird? I’ll give this series a shot since the Prohibition Era sounds somewhat nostalgic and romantic to me, a la Asuna, and hey, there are alchemists!

Doujin Work
Air date: July 2007
Opening Theme: ??? by ???
Ending Theme: ??? by ???
Interest: Middle

Story: The heroine, Najimi, is invited by her classmate Tsuyuri to walk into a doujinshi exhibition and sales event. She
experiences plenty of culture shocks and, influenced by Tsuyuri and her childhood friend Justice, declares that she will also partake in doujin activities. Najimi is horrible at drawing, however, yet she vows to continue on the path until she ‘creates a hit doujinshi’ with her friends.
Impressions: Doujinshi artists! I’m there. And har har, the heroine’s full name is Osana Najimi (cookie to you if you get
the bad pun). Tsuyuri is supposed to be a sadist who draws violent R-18 doujinshi, so I’ll be on the lookout for that. Let’s see if yaoi, yuri, loli, shota, bara, guro, furry, etc. etc. all make it on-screen! (Though not necessarily in that order)

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (When Cicadas Cry Solutions)
Air date: July 6th, 2007
Opening Theme: Naraku no Hana by Shimamiya Eiko
Ending Theme: Taishou a by anNina
Interest: High

Story: It is the year 1983 for a small, rural village called Hinamizawa in Japan. Keiichi is a boy who recently moved into
Hinamizawa and he befriends four girls there. Each year the village holds the Watanagashi Festival, and for the past four years, one person would be murdered and another would be demoned away on that day… Will the cycle of tragedies be ended this year?
Impressions: This is the second season of the original Higurashi no Naku Koro ni series, and I’ll definitely be watching it. I
already know about the ending of the whole story, but it’ll be a treat to see it all animated and Hanyuu “Au au au~”ing her way to the end. Hopefully the improved animation quality will hold up past five episodes. Kai will also a new, anime-only arc titled “Yakusamashi-hen” (Disaster Awakening Chapter), so I’m looking forward to see what it holds; perhaps more background story for the characters.

MOETAN (or Moe-tan)
Air date: July 2007
Opening Theme: ??? by ???
Ending Theme: ??? by ???
Interest: Middle

Story: An anime adaption of a series of English vocabulary handbooks (and listening CDs) for Japanese people that has sold over 400,000 volumes.
Impressions: If I recall correctly, the original vocab books has inserts of cute anime girls who ‘teach’ you weird but correct English. I have to wonder about how the anime adaption will turn out. And look! Ink (the girl on the right?) is supposed to be 17!

Mushiuta (Insect Song)
Air date: July 5th, 2006
Opening Theme: ??? by ???
Ending Theme: ??? by ???
Interest: Low

Story: It is the near future, ten years after the “Insects” that can consume people’s dreams and give them supernatural
powers in return appeared. Kusuriya Daisuke, a first year student at a public high school, encounters a girl named Anmoto Shiika on his way home and the two become attracted to each other. However, Shiika is a fugitive from the national top secret facility, GARDEN, that takes custody of those who are “Insect-possessed”. The Special Environmental Conservation Executive Office sends out its top agent to mercilessly track down Shiika. A resistance organization called “Mushibane”, led by Lady Bird, appears. The battle chronicle on holy nights, interwoven by the painful and intense thoughts of dreamers, now begins…
Impressions: Er, Shiika looks cute. The series is billed as the “best and worst boy-meets-girl” story, but I’m not buying
it…

Nanatsu-iro★Drops (Seven-Colored★Drops)
Air date: July 2007
Opening Theme: Shining stars bless☆ by Utatsuki Kaori
Ending Theme: mo・o! by LOVERIN TAMBURIN
Interest: High

Story: Let’s say, when you’re gazing at the stars outside of your window. Let’s say, when you’re writing in your secret diary
at the end of the day. A strange event suddenly falls from the sky…
In a busy city, there are trains at the many stations. It’s just a bit inconvenient, but there’s a quiet viewing platform from which you can see many shooting stars… That place is Hoshigaoka of Maikata City, which is called “the closest town to the stars in the world”.
A boy named Tsuwabuki Masaharu attends the only school in Hoshigaoka, the Seijou Academy. He is slightly awkward, but a commonplace normal guy. On one May day, Masaharu’s life took an 180 degree turn. He drank a weird juice that causes him to turn into a small sheep plushie whenever the sun sets. There is only one way for him to return to normal, and that is to collect seven “Star Drops” that fall along with the shooting stars in the town. The person who can actually collect the Star Drops is a special girl chosen by a mysterious wand, Masaharu’s classmate, Akihime Sumomo. Masaharu cannot allow Sumomo to know about his true identity, or he will never be a normal human again. So during the day, he is a guy, and at night, he is a sheep plushie called Yuki-chan.
A page of a strange story now begins…
Impressions: Too…cute…! But who knows how the animation will go, in comparison to Ito Noizi’s original moe moe art. Since
Nanatsu-iro★Drops is a romantic comedy, this will be another one of those series that will either be cutely quirky or massively retarded, no middle ground at all.

School Days
Air date: July 3rd, 2007
Opening Theme: Innocent Blue by DeviceHigh
Ending Theme: ??? by ???
Interest: High

Story: The anime adaption of the PC erogame of the same name, but without the ero-parts. One wuss of a guy, two girls to
go in his love triangle, and many other girls to jump in anytime they want.
Impressions: School Days is probably an average erogame, but it has honorably memorable bad ends, such as “The Bloody
Conclusion”, that make it famous. I hope some of that makes it into the anime…

Tetsuko no Tabi (Tetsuko’s Travels)
Air date: June 26th, 2007
Opening Theme: Nanka Ari kamo ne by SUPER BELL'’Z
Ending Theme: Ooinaru Tabiji by SUPER BELL'’Z
Interest: Low

Story: The anime adaption about one train otaku’s trips around Japan via train.
Impressions: Umm, what? I’m only giving this anime a shot because of the novelty of a train otaku.

I’m getting tired. I’ll finish up writing summaries and impressions of anime tomorrow.

Zero no Tsukaima ~Futatsuki no Kishi~ (Zero’s Familiar ~The Knight of Two Moons~)
Air date: July 7th, 2007
Opening Theme: I SAY YES by ICHIKO
Ending Theme: Suki!? Kirai!? Suki!!! by Kugimiya Rie as Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière
Interest: High

Story:
Impressions:

ZOMBIE-LOAN
Air date: July 3rd, 2007
Opening Theme: ??? by ???
Ending Theme: ??? by ???
Interest: Low

  7. I liked Zombie Loan, until they suddenly ended it without an ending! That made me angry (the animation could have been better too).

Hm, but this has tempted me to try school days.
