Suzumiya Haruhi Cosplay Update (DONE!…almost)

January 18, 2007 on 1:40 am | In The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Cosplay |

ZOMG finished…?!

Update 01/18/2007: Actually, no, I’m not done with it yet. There are plenty of small flaws all over the costume, which I will slowly address over the course of next two weeks.

I’ve been working on a school uniform from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The costume is about 30% 45% 50% 55% 65% 85% done so far; the remaining 15% being the hair ribbon (the third one; I’ve messed up two already), armbands (two of them: “Super Director” & “Brigade President”), and proper shoes.

The costume has taken ~50 hours of my time so far, mainly because of the fact that I messed up on the previous top (see below) and I have to start over. I’m not really sure why I’m working on the costume now- It’s meant for the Anime Boston convention in April 2007. @_@

I’ll update again when I finish off more of the costume.
I might consider selling the completed costume set after the convention, but I doubt too many people would want a pre-worn cosplay costume. >_>

It’s a small, small collar after all…
**blames loli genes**

Nothing to see here. Just a Pikachu-looking collar.

Outdated photo: (The shirt collar has been destroyed since the picture was taken due to inaccuracies)

  1. So, are you going solo or with a group?

  2. It’s actually an “N” not M… heres a picture for reference that I found this week.

    Looks good! I’m actually trying to convince my friends to cosplay as a student from North High as well… perhaps this will pursuade them? ^^;

  3. @ Tsubaki: I’m going with a group of people so that I can get the group discount rate, but none of them will be cosplaying a The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya character. I’m hoping that I can arrange to meet with a Suzumiya Haruhi group online so I can do the ED dance at the convention.

@ koko: You’re right; the leading stroke on the ‘N’ makes it look like an ‘M’ from a distance… Thanks for pointing it out!

  4. I’d lend you my sewing machine, but I live in England! Also, there are three bands: the two you mentioned, and then the Ultra Detective one, from the island mystery arc.

  5. Hmm, good point; I thought of it, too, but I figured that it’d be too obscure for most people to realize what it is. I’ve also seen Haruhi wearing an armband reading “Super Editor” on a magazine cover once.

  6. Don’t get how you messed up the top… looks pretty good to me. Heres another reference picture. This time for the hair ribbon thing. Can’t wait until its finished!

  7. @koko:
Thanks for that hair ribbon link! The ribbon is very easy to make, actually, but I haven’t been able to locate the correct color thereof selling at JoAnn’s. I might need to hit some other craft/fabric shop. >_>

  11. Any idea where to get suitable shoes from? I’m totally stumped!

    Comment by Maz — September 24, 2007 #

  12. You can get shoes from nearly every department, outlet, and retail store nowadays because school uniforms have become popular. Depending on where you shop, a pair of brown loafers can cost anywhere from $15 to $60.

  13. Hi (again! By the way thanks for your advice on the shoes!) I’ve noticed you’ve got the bottom of your collar a bit higher than Haruhi’s - I though I’d try to do it lower but would the light blue thing be too baggy? Would the outfit not work as well like that?

    Comment by Maz — September 25, 2007 #

  14. It’ll work if you make it longer. It’s just an error on my part; it was the first collar that I made from the pattern and it did turn out too short.

    Comment by Atashi — September 25, 2007 #

  15. My you must be getting annoyed at me XD For your first collar it’s great - heck for A collar it’s great, I was just wondering ’cause the reference pictures change and it gets confusing!

Another Q - did you attach your white top to the collar in the end? And the light blue piece too, is it all attached as one?

    Comment by Maz — September 27, 2007 #

  16. Yes, everything is attached as one item. It’s meant to be a functional school uniform.

  17. Hey! I think I saw you! Were you in the masquerade? Well anywho! Good job on your costume! I hope to see you for AB08!

  18. got an advice your skirt is too high that you make not look a like suzumiya. . .
    woosh!

  19. Nicely done!Looks better than the ones you can buy on the cosplay websites. I just got all the materials I need from JoAnn’s yesterday, actually, for my Haruhi costume. I already made my hair band and arm band. ^.^

  23. Hey, that looks AMAZING!

If it’s still in good shape, and all the dimensions fit, I might be interested in buying it off you. ^^
