Ouran High School Host Club Episode 24: And Then Kyoya Met

Summary

The Host Club opens during late autumn with a kotatsu theme. Haruhi wonders why Tamaki and Kyoya created the crazy Host Club in the first place, and Kyoya replies that it is because it’s crazy. He then recalls to a time two years ago…

Shortly after Kyoya enters 9th grade (in spring), he becomes the Class President for the third year running. He sees his classmates only as the positions that their respective families represent. One of them invites Kyoya to go stargazing with him, and Kyoya agrees to because he has business interest in the classmate’s father.
At home, his older sister, Fuyumi, asks him why he agreed to go along with his classmate. As the third son of the family, Kyoya feels that he has to do and perfect the jobs for his status and nothing more, because of the more-or-less modest outlook of his future. His sister knows that Kyoya is smart and wonders if he truly enjoys what he is doing, but Kyoya declares that it doesn’t matter whether he enjoys it or not.
During breakfast, Kyoya’s father tells him to befriend the son of the Suoh group who is transferring to middle school department of Ouran Academy. Kyoya believe that it’ll be simple, no matter what kind of a person Suoh is.

Kyoya goes to greet the new student along with the Vice Class President. The student introduces himself as Suoh Tamaki and immediately compliments on the Vice Class President’s long, straight hair and that her heart must be straightforward and beautiful, too.
Tamaki tells Kyoya that since he’s finally in Japan, he wants to sit at a kotatsu and goes on and on about the things he has heard about kotatsus. Kyoya becomes very confused at Tamaki’s view on the kotatsu and even slightly irritated, but he quickly recovers and says that he’ll get one. Tamaki becomes extremely excited, goes into a celebration routine, and announces that he and Kyoya are now close friends. Kyoya identifies Tamaki as a total idiot.

A while later, Tamaki begs Kyoya to take him to see Kyoto since he’s finally in Japan and goes on and on about the things he wants to see in Kyoto. Kyoya corrects him and informs Tamaki that some of the things actually exist in Okinawa. He also agrees to take Tamaki to Kyoto and Okinawa, which excites Tamaki into his celebration routine again.
Tamaki’s behavior during their trips to Kyoto and Okinawa, including mistaking a Shisa for Namahage, offends Kyoya greatly, so Kyoya plans to break Tamaki’s whimsical attitude during their planned next trip, which is to Hokkaido. However, Tamaki declines to go to Hokkaido because they shouldn’t spend all of their time playing and should study for their exams instead.

Kyoya goes into a rage because Tamaki himself asked for a trip to Hokkaido for the next week at the end of their Okinawa trip in the previous week. He then tries to calm himself because he still needs to maintain a cheery relationship with Tamaki for his family. Fuyumi watches Kyoya punch a sofa and feels happy that it’s the first time Kyoya has enjoyed anything so much.
On the following Sunday, Tamaki pays a visit to the Otori household and surprises the Otori siblings with his amazing piano skills. Tamaki then chats with Kyoya about his outlook on life, that if he doesn’t suceed in inheriting the family business he can always make money from his good looks or fun. Kyoya finally reaches his breaking point and snaps. He flips the table, pins Tamaki to the floor, and yells at Tamaki for talking so easily about giving up.

On a deeper level, Kyoya knows that even though Tamaki is an idiot, somehow he has managed to see through Kyoya’s façade. While Kyoya doesn’t want to be beaten by his older brothers, he has been suffering from his status as the third son and accepted the concept that he can’t surpass them. Tamaki tells Kyoya that he is the one who isn’t making any effort toward his ideals, which makes Kyoya realize something important inside of him and decides to go beyond what his status expects of him.

Four months later, Tamaki sits happily at a kotatsu in the Otori household and reveals his latest idea: creating a Host Club when they enter the high school department. While Tamaki mentions other students who he’d like to have in the club, Kyoya acknowledges that ever since meeting Tamaki, he sees the world differently now.

Impressions
First off, let me say that Kyoya is ♥SEXYHOT♥.
Now since that’s out of the way, I’ll move onto my actual impressions on the episode… Not that the abundance of Kyoya just made it sexier…

I would like to see Fuyumi-neesan more, but with Ouran ending in two episodes, it’s highly unlikely that her character will get any more speaking lines, if even appearing at all. I liked how she keeps trying to stuff clothes into Kyoya’s dresser and only creates bigger messes every time; must be one of the problems of being rich and not having to personally do the laundry. Or Fuyumi-neesan is simply an inherent failure at putting away clothes in other people’s dressers.

Kyoya shows his widest gamut of facial expressions yet, rivaling those in episode 19. I wonder if even half of them would sell in the Host Club. Maybe the Host Club should do a Mental Breakdown theme for once, featuring the members in various states of distress and trauma. Wait, no, Renge already made a movie out of that stuff a long time ago.

I think Kyoya has incredible antebrachial/carpal/manual/phalangeal strength, given how he easily cracks Tamaki’s Shisa statue into two halves while not moving at all and splinters a high-grade ball-point pen with three fingers alone. What does he do to train those muscles? Typing a lot? Kyoya also flips a table… Go torque, go!

The Otori dining table is as creepy as heck. For such a rich family, I swear they’d have more wall decorations! Fuyumi-neesan needs to step in and hire people to paint the walls pink, at the very least.

Looks like functions and limits… Kyoya is doing Calculus in 9th grade? That’s so hot.	It’s The New York Times in the Ouran universe! And inversed to boot!
Kyoya writes. On humans and morals. ♥ Tamaki is the epitome of either subject! ♥	This reminds me of the time when Ranka walked all over Tamaki…
